Mariano - a zoom portrait from a New Year Scottish Borders Life Drawing Society ‘12 hour New Year Marathon Paint In ’. A -2 hour zoom session involving 30 or so life models from around the world. They posed for 30 minutes each choosing how many poses they wanted to fit in to the time slot. This pose of Mariano from Argentina was 5 minutes long. He is spectacularly dramatic life model as you can see from the painting. There was absolutely no time to finesse facial or any other details, but this is what I love as means I can make a gestural work. Colours were picked up from my palette ‘on spec’! The yellow shoulder was to suggest a highlight and dark indigo to capture long dark hair and contrast. All exquisitely exhilarating!

En plein air sketchbook study at Minchinhampton Common in Gloucestershire. This is a 25 minute or so sketch on Seawhite 140lb not recycled watercolour paper. It was done on a bright sunny day on the common lands, high on the Cotswold Escarpment in June. Cattle freely roam as do people and the whole area is stunningly beautiful.
