The landscape of South Somerset is rich with tangible evidence of a history stretching back to the Neolithic. Whilst this is ancient, it also exists in the present time and forms a connection between our own lives and that of our forbears. We do not understand much about those people, but we do understand some basic things that we have in common; our few short decades of existence; our search for understanding, our need to express ourselves and the thread of history that connects us, none of which have changed very much over time. The obvious imagery in the painting is of Stonehenge, arguably the best known and most impressive Neolithic monument in the world. The textural under painting is applied by knife and brush, and transparent glazes are then used to build a depth of layering. The symbols scratched and carved into the surface of these glazes are all derived from patterns used around 5000 years ago, the meaning of which is lost to us, but still seem to resonate today.
